0 - Bessie explains that her boyfriend Willard stayed in Milan for about a year before going back to Macon to see some of his people. A young man named Cardell was also interested in Bessie. He was a talented piano player and Bessie was attracted to him, but he wouldn't work for a woman and expected women to take care of him. Upon meeting Bessie, however, he got a job.
