1 - In April of 1960 the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation hired Alan Lomax as music supervisor for "Music of Williamsburg," a film produced to give tourists a sense of daily life in mid-eighteenth-century Virginia. Lomax researched the period and its music, and brought the Spiritual Singers of Coastal Georgia (later the Georgia Sea Island Singers) together with Bahamian drummer Nat Rahmings and Appalachian multi-instrumentalist Hobart Smith. Their recordings are included here. For more information on the film and Lomax's involvement with it, see Carol J. Oja's "Filming the Music of Williamsburg with Alan Lomax," Institute for Studies in American Music newsletter, Fall 2003 (Brooklyn College of CUNY). [Source: Editor]
:: Recording Notes ::
0 - Lomax identifies one of the participants on the box for tape 933 as ?Missora,? but gives no further information about who she is or what her role may be ? it is assumed that she is clapping. [Source: Editor]
