0 - Lomax asks Jones if she knows anyone who has seen the devil. She explains that the devil visits earth in many different forms. She tells a story about a man who was carried to hell by a brindle cat. She also tells about a woman named Nine (or Ninah), who was inflicted with a fatal disease given to her by her "sporting boy" [syphilis?] and who the devil kept from praying. Jones relates Nine's dream about five big bedbugs.
