0 - During her adolescence, Jones lived in Fitzgerald, Georgia, where she had her first child at age 11. At 19 she was married, her husband a sharecropper on a local plantation. Jones had accompanied him when he worked in turpentine camps and quarries. At age 19 she moved to St. Simons, one of the Georgia Sea Islands, renowned since the Civil War for its tradition of spiritual singing.
