1 - La Mola is a small hamlet,in the parrish of Our Lady of the Pilar; this was an arranged song and dance evening known as "Xacota", in the inn which was one of the few buildings in the hamlet. Each person is known by a nickname, often that of the family home. [Source: field log]
2 - Recordings from La Mola, Parrish of Our Lady of the Pilar, a remote hamlet at the far tip of Formentera island. Recorded in the front courtyard of can Pep Xumeu, which also served as a small inn. This song and dance gathering ("Xacota") was set up for Lomax. The "redoblat" vocal glottal technique in this form has so far resisted attempts to establish an origin or even real parallels elsewhere, though there are some similarities to vocal practices in Mongolia and elsewhere. In Ibiza the tendency is to attribute it vaguely to "The Moors," though there is no obvious parallel in North African practice. [Source: field log; fieldwork; Esperanša Bonet, Jaume Escandell]
