1 - The Mallorca recordings were made following the festival in Palma, Mallorca, and are the first fieldwork sessions of Alan Lomax's six months in Spain. These Valldemossa recordings are a mixture of traditional (agricultural work songs, the very old Cant de la Sibil.la, etc) and folklorized styles. Several fine black and white photographs accompany them.Tape boxes note that Francesca Mas Torres worked as she sang the work songs and the recordings include the sounds of the agricultural tasks. In Valldemossa the atmosphere, Lomax wrote on the tape box, became much less formal when the folklore group ended and several men stayed to sing friction drum (ximbomba) songs. The electricity was cut at 1:00 a.m., he wrote, and "with two bottles of cognac we strolled off to the moonlit hills"?"all bachelors.." to keep singing ximbomba songs. [Source: Editor]
